Southam dominate but disappointing end leads to defeat for footballers

On Wednesday afternoon a much changed 6th form team hosted Kineton in the Regional Cup.

A tactical change pre game saw the team play 3 at the back, allowing more bodies to take control and dominate possession in midfield from the outset. Indeed it was a shock that it took a full 15 minutes for Southam to register the first goal of the game. Will M, who had a fantastic game in midfield, eventually beat the defence with some close control and this led to Eric S lashing a short through ball into the bottom corner.Sam A and Ollie S stood out in defence with their ability to close down opposition attackers and break down attacks.Southam continued to control possession with Harley, Joe W, Charlie and Will all coming close. Unfortunately, the first sloppy error saw Kineton equalise just before half time.

As the game progressed you could see the Kineton players build in confidence, however Southam still looked the most likely to score next. It was Will M, who again unlocked the defence,  driving through the centre of the park, before releasing Joe W with an outstanding through ball. Joe took it in his stride and best the keeper with a powerful first touch finish.
It was at this point that the game turned. A rare foray into the Southam penalty area resulted in a shove on the Kineton attacker. A penalty was awarded, but unfortunately a Southam defender disagreed with the decision and was sent off for swearing at the referee. Kineton scored the resultant penalty and with their confidence raised, scored a third goal that saw the game finish 2-3.
An unfortunate end to a game that really  should have been won before half time.

Man of the match…..Will M
