For the first time Southam College has taken a sixth form netball team on tour. Due to the nature of the sixth form team and the commitment the girls have shown throughout their school years at Southam we decided to take the girls on tour and they didn’t disappoint. The club weekend that Condover ran invited clubs and schools to bring teams from all over the country to compete.
The U18 division was the largest of the weekend, having 15 teams competing. The teams were split into 2 groups which saw the girls face 6 other teams on the Saturday. Due to the number of teams the matches were 10mins one way with rolling subs. This suited the girls and allowed them to play a variety of combos and get a lot of court time.
Saturday saw the girls start with a bang winning 4-0 again King Edward School 2s a strong team who went on to top the group with only Southam being able to defeat them. the girls pressured every pass with strong performances in defence by Alice and Amy which stopped the KES team scoring throughout. They then proceeded to win 4 matches – all in which were close and encouraged the girls to increase their performance. They lost 2 close matches to Cardinal Newman Netball Academy (Preston) (6-4) and The Royal (7-6). The final match of Saturday saw Southam win 11-2 Due to some exceptional shooting from Marie, Hope and Madison which allowed them to finish 4th in group B with the same points as 3rd place.
The girls then qualified for the Cup competition which saw them face 3 extremely tough teams on the Sunday. Unfortunately the girls didn’t manage a victory on the Sunday after facing Cardinal Newman Netball Academy 1st team (the eventual winners), King Edward 1st team and Cardinal Newman Netball Academy 2nd team again. Even though they narrowly missed out on a victory they played some fantastic netball and eventually finished 7th overall.
The weekend saw brilliant performances by all the girls and I am pleased to have taken some of you on your final tour representing Southam College.
Player of the tournament: Amy – For exceptional performance throughout the weekend and showing a never give up attitude.
Well done, it’s been an honour to coach you ladies.
